Influence of Cannabidiol Nanoparticles on the Quality and Shelf Life of Strawberries
Jun 6th 2023
We are excited to share with you the findings of a groundbreaking study on the influence of a transparent and edible coating of encapsulated Cannabidiol (CBD) nanoparticles on the quality and shelf life of strawberries. The study explores the potential of CBD as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent, with promising results that could revolutionize postharvest treatments and extend the freshness of strawberries.
Edible coatings have emerged as a fascinating innovation in the food industry, offering a thin layer of protection that can extend the shelf life of fresh produce. These coatings reduce moisture loss, weight loss, gas exchange, respiration, and oxidative reaction rates, thereby preserving the quality of fruits and vegetables. They can also incorporate active ingredients such as antioxidants and antimicrobials, further enhancing the protective properties of the coating.
CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant, has gained attention for its therapeutic benefits and potential as an antibacterial agent. In this study, researchers investigated the use of encapsulated CBD isolate (eCBDi) nanoparticles in combination with a sodium alginate polysaccharide-based solution to create an edible coating for strawberries.
The results were remarkable. Strawberries coated with eCBDi nanoparticles exhibited delayed deterioration compared to the control group. The coated strawberries showed reduced weight loss, total acidity, microbial activity, and increased antioxidant activity. This suggests that the eCBDi nanoparticles effectively served as an active food coating agent, promoting antioxidation and antimicrobial activity.
The study also examined the physicochemical characteristics of the eCBDi nanoparticles and the microstructure of the edible coating layer on the strawberries. The nanoparticles were found to be stable, homogeneous, and less prone to physical instability. The coating layer formed a consistent and solid barrier on the strawberry surface, protecting it from external factors.
One of the significant advantages of this research is the potential for CBD to replace existing antimicrobials, especially in light of the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. CBD has demonstrated effectiveness against various bacteria and fungi, making it a promising alternative in combating infections.
The findings open up new possibilities for the application of CBD in food active packaging, where it could play a crucial role in preserving the quality and extending the shelf life of various perishable food items.
This study represents a significant step forward in the development of innovative techniques to enhance food preservation and safety. The use of edible coatings, combined with the therapeutic properties of CBD, holds immense potential for the food industry.
